Matchbox Superfast Collection & Identification Guide |

Matchbox Superfast diecast models were introduced in 1969 to combat the craze of the Hotwheel’s brand. Hotwheels were newer, cooler and faster than the original Matchbox Series. The “Regular Wheels” were swapped out for Superfast wheels for the Matchbox brand to compete with Hotwheels. The earlier Superfast models were considered “Transitional Models” as the same body casting was used but the wheels were replaced with superfast while newer models were developed over the years. Comparison pictures of the transitional models are included in the library guide.
A little bit about the Guide – All the Matchbox Superfast models shown are made in England. Some of the same models in later years were made in Macau, Hong Kong and China but only the ones from England are in this library. The identification numbering scheme used in this guide is extended from the Original Lesney Matchbox 1-75 Series based on the year issued. Here is how it works! For example, in the Original Series 3 the Cement Mixer (issued in 1953) as No. 3a, 3b was the Bedford Tipper Truck (issued in 1961) and the Mercedes Ambulance issued in 1967 was 3c. The first Matchbox Superfast Series 3 was a reissue of the Mercedes Ambulance in 1970 which is considered the transition model with superfast wheels and continued to be identified as 3c. Later Superfast version included Monteverdi Hai (issued in 1973) and Porsche 911 Turbo (issued in 1978). If you follow the identification numbering scheme based on the issue date, it would be assumed that the Monteverdi Hai would be No. 3d and the Porsche 911 Turbo would be No. 3e. |
